Re: Resolution for the University of Virginia
The Georgetown Faculty Senate approved the following resolution, and sent it to George Cohen, Chair of the Faculty Senate at the University of Virginia, on June 23:
The Georgetown University Faculty Senate joins the University of Virginia community in condemning the dismissal of its President early in her term when (i) she enjoys the confidence and support of its faculty, students, senior administrators, alumni, and donors; (ii) the dismissal came about without the consultation, deliberation, and due process required for such an action at a university; and (iii) no evidence of financial crisis, moral turpitude, illegal behavior, malfeasance, or ineptitude has been indicated. The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors has violated the principle of shared governance that is essential to excellence in higher education, and thereby undermined the University of Virginia’s stature as one of the nation’s leading universities
Cohen thought it was “tremendous,” thanked us for our support, and said “We are honored to have our Georgetown colleagues stand with us.”
